Out-the-Door Costs Associated with Used Cars
When shopping for used cars, knowing the full cost of what you’ll be paying—the price that will get you “out the door” with your chosen vehicle—can be a big help. Here at LaFontaine Hyundai Livonia, in Livonia, MI, we want to make sure you know the additional costs you may encounter.
State and Local Sales Tax
Just like everything else you buy, used cars have sales tax added to them. The tax is collected via our dealership, and forwarded to the appropriate government offices.
Title and Registration
Every state requires vehicles to be registered and titled with their transportation agency or department of motor vehicles. There are fees associated with this, and instead of making you head to the DMV, we’ll take care of this for you right here at our Hyundai dealership.
Registration is done via your license plate. If you already have a plate from a trade-in, you’ll need to pay a fee to have the information transferred from one vehicle to the other. If you don’t have a plate, you’ll need to pay for a new one.
A title is needed to establish who the legal owner of the vehicle is. Whenever the title is acquired by a new owner (that’s you!), a title transfer fee is charged.
There is a lot of paperwork involved in purchasing a used car. If you use Hyundai financing for a vehicle, then there will certainly be bank documents. And, of course, registration, title, and more. There are also a lot of places where those documents need to be submitted and filed, often with fees.
The process and all the charges for the paperwork are pulled together and labelled as a documentation fee. Here in the state of Michigan, there are caps in place for how much this total fee can be, a set dollar amount or percentage of the sale price, whichever is less.
At LaFontaine Hyundai Livonia, we want to make sure you can drive off our lot in the used Hyundai Kona Ultimate or Hyundai Elantra you’ve been scoping out. Ask us about used vehicle specials that can help you do just that!
